MSU integrates the science and policy of water

Michigan is a state defined, literally, by water. It surrounds us, both literally and figuratively; defining our very peninsulas, fostering much of the state's manufacturing, shipping and tourism offerings, and keeping us, and that which feeds and shelters us, alive.

At the beginning of this year, Gov. Jennifer Granholm announced a comprehensive water initiative for the Great Lakes, addressing water withdrawal, invasive species, open water disposal, water discharge permits, a revised sanitary code, wetlands protection and federal funding for Great Lakes
restoration projects.

From human health to land use to wildlife to industry and agriculture, water is a deep subject. Michigan State is involved in water on many levels, seeking ways to integrate world-class science with policy at the heart of every community.
