Profiles of PEARL Cooperatives

Rwanda
  • Maraba
    Membership: 1,600 members, about 700 are women and 350 are genocide widows.
    Export : 33 tons in 2002, 36 in 2003 and 63 tons in 2004, all at over $1.30 a pound.
    Notable: In 2004, they sold about 25 sacks for $2.20/lb., the highest price offered for a Rwandan coffee. They are the site of the new "Specialty Coffee Production and Processing Training Center " complete with cupping lab.
    Future: In 2005, they are shooting for an export target of 80 tons. They are initiating an organic coffee program in 2005 and are building a third washing station.

  • Karaba
    Membership: 670 members, about 30 percent women.
    Export : 22 tons of specialty coffee in 2004.
    Notable: It nearly is Fair Trade certified. (For more about Fair Trade, see www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ )
    Future: PEARL will assist Karaba to capture more water in 2005 and better organize the farmers for higher quality production. It aims for 36 exportable tons of specialty coffee in 2005.

  • BufCafe
    Membership: 300 members and a woman named Epiphanie, who has given 30 percent of her station to two associations of producers making the link between her and the farmers stronger, following PEARL recommendations.
    Export : 13 tons of specialty grade green at $1.35/lb. in 2004.
    Future: PEARL is assisting in new equipment and with the purchase of a new depulper. It aims to produce 36 exportable tons of specialty grade coffee in 2005.

  • Gashonga
    Membership: 520 members with about 30 percent being women.
    Export: 7 tons of specialty grade green in 2004.
    Future: Aiming for 36 exportable tons as well of Fair Trade coffee for 2005. They await a final stamp from the ministry for FT certification. PEARL is providing strong support in cooperative governance.

  • Rusenyi

  • IGK Kawa
    Membership: 300 members, about 30 percent women.
    Export : 6 tons specialty grade green in 2004.
    Notable: New to PEARL.
    Future: PEARL working with IGK Kawa to overcome significant water problems and improving organization to aim for 18 tons of exportable specialty grade green in 2005.

  • UCAR-Kamonyi
    Membership: 120 members, about 40 percent women.
    Export: 2 tons in 2004.
    Notable: New to PEARL .
    Future: Aiming to produce 36 tons of exportable specialty green in 2005 and to increase membership.

  • Musasa
    Membership: 520 members, about 30 percent women.
    Export: 22 tons in 2004.
    Future: Shooting for 54 tons specialty green in 2005. PEARL will assist with cupping lab and a mini-mill in 2005 to help reach the production goal.

  • Humure
    Membership:
    400 members, about 30 percent women.
    Future: This is a new initiative for 2005 year. Aiming to produce 18 tons of export green specialty grade.

  • Nyakizu
    Membeship:
    360 members, about 40 percent women.
    Future: This is a new initiative. Aiming to produce 18 tons of export green specialty coffee.
