Zon Special ReportIt's the online game with an odd name—"Zon/New Chengo"—and an ambitious mission: Provide folks around the world with a fun yet educational way to learn about China.

Yong Zhao, MSU University Distinguished Professor, has completed the interactive game as the excitement builds for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. "Zon/New Chengo," he says, is the world's first comprehensive video game to teach Chinese culture and language.

"Games are supposed to be fun and educational," said Zhao, a Chinese native and internationally respected scholar. "With this one, we have struck a good balance."

The goal is to fare well and advance socially and economically, with players advancing from "tourists" to "residents" and finally to "citizens" of modern China. At the different stages, players encounter quests, have access to learning materials—including live Chinese tutors—and can organize and participate in social activities.
