China Turfgrass

China Turfgrass Special ReportMSU is participating in one of the summer’s largest global projects—one that, if all goes well, won’t be readily noticed.

The university’s world-famous turf team has been contracted to help China build a portable athletic turf in the new Beijing National Stadium, aka the Bird’s Nest. The turf will support the Olympics’ main track and field competitions and the gold medal soccer match, as well as future events.

Once again, MSU gives the world the Gurus of Grass. University researchers first introduced portable turf at the 1994 World Cup in the Pontiac Silverdome, the first time World Cup soccer was played indoors. That was a spectacle. Then came Spartan Stadium—the ultimate home field—followed by Athens, Greece, in 2004.
