Statement from Lou Anna K . Simon
MSU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
May 7, 2004

When Peter steps down, it will mark the end of the longest-serving president-provost team in the Big Ten . I have had the privilege to work closely with Peter, who is a valued colleague and good friend . We share a deep commitment to the success of Michigan State University and have accomplished a lot over the years. In fact, we still have much to do before Peter departs the presidency.

Peter works tirelessly to raise MSU's profile and reputation as a globally-connected institution, advancing our study abroad programs and other international initiatives, even while continuing our commitment to the communities and people we serve nearer to home .

When he went to Iraq last year to serve as financial coordinator for the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance, many of us worried that he might be preparing to move on to new challenges . Now it seems that the day is coming . No matter what he does next, I know that Peter will always be deeply rooted in Michigan State University.

Peter is working toward a legacy in the tradition of John Hannah, who also both served his nation and brought credit to the university, and who presided over times of tremendous challenge and great change.

However, this is not a day to say goodbye or embarrass Peter with a long list of all that has been accomplished on his watch . There will be time for that later. Right now, we have to get back to work on the many initiatives that will expand and strengthen MSU.
