David Skole’s research focuses on how changes in land use and land cover relate to climate change and sustainable development at the global level. Skole is a professor of forestry and director of MSU’s Carbon2Markets program. With extensive experience in geography, remote sensing and geographical information systems, Skole has developed techniques to understand deforestation and carbon cycles, which has led to a greater understanding of how land changes affect climate change. He is a charter member and former chairperson of the National Science Foundation's Advisory Committee on Environmental Research and Education. He has provided testimony and official reports on land use, deforestation and water research to all levels of government, including the president, Congress and the governor's office. Skole is a member of the MSU Global Observatory for Ecosystems Services and served as director from 2002 to 2005. He was recognized for his climate change research as a member of the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore.

Jay Samek is a research scientist in the Department of Forestry with expertise in social forestry, remote sensing and geographical information systems technologies. He has more than 10 years experience working in Southeast Asia using satellite remote-sensing imagery to assess forest cover and study changes in land use and land cover. Samek is using these technologies to establish forest carbon sequestration projects for the Carbon2Markets project, linking small farmers to carbon financial markets. A member of the MSU Global Observatory for Ecosystems Services, Samek serves as program manager for the program’s Southeast Asia activities, which includes projects in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam. Samek and David Skole have been collaborating for more than 10 years.
