The research of Jianguo "Jack" Liu, MSU's University Distinguished professor and Rachel Carson Chair in Sustainability, focuses on biocomplexity—the study based on the premise that rarely does one action have an isolated effect. Rather, Liu's work acknowledges that people, wildlife and the environment are closely intertwined and policies need to reflect that to solve some of the world's most pressing problems,
including global environmental changes such as species loss and habitat fragmentation.
The Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability, which Liu directs, strives to understand, document and anticipate this interdependency using holistic and multi-disciplinary approaches that draw upon experts from diverse backgrounds across the world.
