Dozens of incoming freshmen will put their passports to work as they start their Spartan experience even before they set foot on campus.

The Freshman Seminars Abroad program will take them to Quebec City, Canada; Dublin, Ireland; and Hikone, Japan, this summer. An additional seminar abroad program will take another group to Mérida, Mexico, in March.

Freshman seminars abroad are in the tradition of MSU's study abroad offerings, which include programs from Antarctica to the Virgin Islands. Programs range in length from two weeks to an academic year and offer course work in virtually any major.

Senior Kim Anderson visited Quebec City in the summer of 2003 and says the experience made starting college less scary.

“I would definitely recommend the freshman seminar abroad for any incoming freshman,” she said. “It was a great opportunity for meeting professors and other students and it helped me make a smooth transition to college life.”
