Abstract: This paper uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative data to analyze lay participation in the NIEHS Breast Cancer and Environment Research Centers. These federally-funded projects were initiated in the wake of controversy regarding the role of lay people in breast cancer research, and adopted new forms. This assessment was purposefully conducted slightly past the midway research point in order to provide feedback that could be valuable to participants before research was completed and new controversies arose. Findings show that although participatory mechanisms have been a focus of these centers, conflict between advocates and experts may arise upon research completion due to underlying differences that traditionally go unnoticed and unaddressed by funding agencies and participants.
